Description

A simple and delicious recipe for making French bread using sourdough discard, perfect for effortless baking.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups sourdough discard
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the sourdough discard and warm water.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix the flour, salt, sugar, and yeast.
  3. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf.
  7. Place the shaped loaf on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  8. Cover and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  9. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
  10. Score the top of the loaf with a sharp knife and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • For a crustier bread, place a pan of water in the oven while baking.
  • Feel free to add herbs or spices to the dough for extra flavor.
